Attorney General Releases Bodycam Footage of Fatal NYPD Shooting of Bangladeshi Teen – NYC

May 06, 2024 MANHATTAN, New York – Over the weekend New York officials released officers body worn camera footage showing the moments leading up to the fatal police shooting of Bangladeshi teen, Win Rozario, who was experiencing a mental health emergency.

Upon arrival, two officers speak with a 17-year-old male at the door of an Ozone Park home. The male is Win Rozario’s younger brother, who explains the situation to officers before walking them inside the home to encounter Win standing in a door way with his mother.

Rozario can be seen retreating further back into what we know now is the kitchen, of the home, only to remove a pair of scissors from a nearby drawer.

According to police camera footage, the responding officers gave the teen repeated orders to drop the pair of scissors and fired tasers at Rozario. In an attempt to mediate, his mother placed herself in between the officers and Win. A struggled ensued between Win’s younger sibling and mother.

The mom was trying to protect her older son and even managed to take the scissors away from Win while she pleaded with officers not to shoot him. The younger brother pleaded with officers to not mistakenly shoot their mother.

The officers then discharged their tasers once more, that’s when Rozario retrieved the scissors again and advanced towards officers. One officer could be heard yelling “shoot him” as the other officer fires his service weapon at Rozario. He was taken to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced deceased.

NYPD officials released the names of the responding veteran officers involved in the deadly shooting incident, Matthew Cianfrocco, a member of the force for nine years and Salvatore Alongi, with 15 years of service.

The family of Win Rozario advocated for the release of the police body cam worn footage from both officers. In the weeks that followed wins death, his family held a press conference to speak about their loss for the first time since the deadly encounter with police.

On April 16, 2024, Brother of Win Rozario who was killed during the police shooting spoke on behalf of the family for the first time since his siblings death.

Families of New Yorkers who suffered from mental illness and were also killed by NYPD rallied with the Rozario family. Youth and racial justice organizations, and elected officials also rallied in Win’s name outside New York Supreme Court.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the footage release is part of an ongoing investigation and campaign to help build trust in the community through transparency.
