Multiple people were arrested as they blocked the entrance, and others were carried out by the police as they refused arrest.

A total of 8 climate activists were arrested today as the protest shut down the entrance to home of Blackstone Group CEO Stephen Schwarzman.

Protesters threw tomato soup across the front of the building, in solidarity with European action “Just Stop Oil”.

Other protesters set up a zombie “eat the rich” dinner party with a tablecloth that read “If we tax the rich, maybe we don’t have to eat them.”

The protest is part of a weeklong “Occupy Park Avenue” series of disruptions, as the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy approaches.

“Blackstone is torching the planet and increasing their profit margins while the average New Yorker is experiencing skyrocketing housing costs amid a cost-of-living crisis,” said Alice Hu, climate campaigner from New York Communities for Change, one of the main organizers of the protest. “We’re calling on Governor Kathy Hochul, who should step up and be a climate hero, to tax the rich for green housing for all and create hundreds of thousands of green jobs.”

The protests are led by Extinction Rebellion NYC, New York Communities for Change, and Sunrise NYC. Other co-sponsoring organizations include 350 NYC, Fridays for Future NYC, Peace Action NYS, Rise and Resist, and Third Act NYC.
