NYC PUMMELED: At Least 23 Dead in Aftermath of Storm Ida

The canopy of an Exxon Station in Whitestone, Queens snapped in half and fell onto a vehicle during the extreme rainfall as the remnants of Hurricane Ida pummeled New York City and the surrounding areas.

The storm, which ravaged the Louisiana coast over the weekend, dumped historic rainfall on New York City and the surrounding areas on Wednesday night and into Thursday prompting a first-ever Flash Flood Emergency warning for the metropolis.


Nine people were killed in New York City in several incidents overnight including a 2 year-old. 7 of those killed were in Queens, one in Brooklyn.

The details of the ninth victim are yet unclear, according to Mayor de Blasio at a morning press conference with the new Governor.


Life-threatening flood conditions were reported all over New York City. Early Thursday morning, the city imposed a travel ban for all non-emergency vehicles in the 5 boroughs. Central Park reported a record 3.5″ of rainfall in just one hour.

In the Bronx, the Major Deegan Expressway was completely flooded closing the highway in both directions and completely submerging vehicles. People had to be rescued from vehicles and trees came down, blocking roads and creating hazardous conditions. The city stopped all subway service overnight, and as of Thursday morning, more than half of NYCs subway lines remain suspended or partially disrupted.

In Staten Island, passengers had to be rescued from an MTA bus that was completely flooded. FDNY ladder 163 took part in the rescue on Smith Place and Decker Ave; in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island. CVS employees from the nearby store also assisted the victims to safety and took them into their store to recover.

Another stuck MTA bus, this time at 3am in Queens, after the travel ban was announced by the Mayor. A rescue of the MTA bus, trapped in flood waters at the Woodhaven Blvd. underpass on Queens Blvd. was attempted but ultimately abandoned when the FDNY fire engine could not safely proceed into flood waters without the potential of also becoming stuck.

Water could be seen bursting from drainage systems in Sunnyside, Queens, where a gas station and several surrounding roads were completely flooded. Cars that were stuck or abandoned were seen strewn about the roads in the area. This was consistent throughout the entire night, vehicles that had attempted to make it through high floodwaters were disabled and abandoned, sometimes in the middle of busy roads and highways.

On the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, floodwaters and disabled vehicles blocked traffic and created difficult obstacles for drivers trying to navigate in both directions. Near the exit for the BQE, large flooding and stalled cars were seen backing up traffic heading Eastbound, while in the Westbound lanes, stalled vehicles dotted the highway.

September 2 2021 – QUEENS, New York:
A serious motor vehicle accident left one person unconscious on the Grand Central Parkway Thursday morning.
The scene showed a black vehicle that crashed into the back of another vehicle that had been completely burned out.
A vehicle fire was reported at this same location last night, unsure if this burned vehicle had been left in the location. Many cars are still stranded in the area after having been flooded overnight.
Highway and NYPD were on scene as well as several ambulances and fire department.

Later in the morning, three bodies were reportedly found floating in a basement area of Queens home.


Bodies were discovered in 152-10 Peck Ave in Queens.

September 2 2021, Brooklyn New York – Roof collapse on a vacant business at 1902 Coney Island Ave , at 2:30 pm firefighters responded to a report of a roof collapse, the owner was on scene, fire fighters confirmed no one was trapped. Water from the broken plumbing was flooding the immediate area.
