Vigilante Gunman Sought After Shooting at Mugger inside a Subway Station Near Times Square

November 08, 2023 MANHATTAN, New York – Police are still searching for the unidentified man who allegedly fired shots towards a homeless individual trying to rob a woman Tuesday evening at a Times Square subway station.

The homeless man suspected in the mugging was identified as Matthew Roesch, 49, who was charged with attempted robbery after a strong arm robbery attempt on a 40-year-old female at the 49th Street N, R, W Line station at around 9:15 p.m., cops said.

According to police, Roesch allegedly told the female victim if she didn’t hand over money he would take her purse and was holding an emergency exit gate open near the turnstiles when the attempted robbery occurred.

Police officials released surveillance images showing the shooting suspect walking through a turnstile at the Times Square subway station wearing a light green T-shirt, black shorts, white socks and black shoes while carrying a khaki backpack and a reusable green B&H Photo store bag.

The suspected vigilante gunman is described by NYPD as an adult male between 35 and 45 years old with a light complexion, around 5-foot-9 and weighing approximately 230 pounds.
