12-Year-Girl Slashed During Class, Second School Stabbing in Two Days - NYC

December 06, 2023 BRONX, New York – A 12-year-old girl was slashed by another student with a knife during a physical altercation while in their classroom Wednesday morning, police said

Just before 10am, a young female student was slashed in the right leg by another student. EMS transported the injured pre-teen to Jacobi Medical Center, where she was last listed in stable condition, police said.

According to police officials, a knife was recovered following the altercation and the suspected 14-year-old attacker was taken into police custody at J.H.S. 123 James. M Kieran School, on Morrison Avenue in Soundview section of the Bronx.

We spoke with a young student accompanied by their parents who said a teacher attempted to intervene an already escalating interaction between two students. The young student speaking with us then stated the teacher yelled for help when a knife was brandished.

An additional teacher responded and also attempted to deescalate by telling the armed student to put down the knife. The visibly shaken student then said the school went into lock down procedures for the remainder of the day.

As groups of anxious parents converged on the Bronx school anxiously awaiting on their kids to be let out we spoke with Michael Mercado, a concerned parent who was there to pick up his child.

“They need to come up with a solution to keep our children safe, because you send your kids to school thinking they’re gonna be ok but things can happen. And I feel, I feel, that they don’t take the proper measures to protect our children because look, a child brought in a knife, thank god it wasn’t a gun.” Mercado said.

The Bronx school assault comes just a day after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in a Brooklyn high school. The suspected attacker in the Brooklyn High School incident was also a fellow student who fled the school following the stabbing.

Only hours later did the teen attacker turn himself in at a police precinct where he was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault with the intent to cause physical injury and criminal possession of a weapon, police officials said
