62-Year-Old Man Struck and Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in East Harlem

April 05, 2023 MANHATTAN, New York – Detectives are searching for the driver of a grey colored SUV who police say fled the scene after striking an elderly man and leaving him gravely injured in East Harlem, Wednesday evening.

According to police officials, a 62-year-old man was crossing the street and struck in the cross walk by the driver of a grey SUV that did not stop to render aid and fled from the location. The hit and run collision occurred on Wednesday evening just after 7:30pm at E 122nd Street and 3rd Avenue, in East Harlem, Manhattan.

The elderly male victim was taken to Harlem Hospital where he was listed in critical condition but did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased, police said.

Police say a grey colored SUV that fled from the scene is reported to have front end damage, including a dented hood and was last seen traveling northbound on 3rd Avenue.

We talked to Eyewitness Nelson Ortega at the scene who told FNTV that he is friends with the victim. The visibly shaken eyewitness and friend gave us a first hand account of what unfolded at the scene of the hit and run.

Mr Ortega said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and also did not render aid, “He didn’t even bother to come out and see if the person was alright or anything” Mr. Ortega mentioned of the driver that fled the scene.

There are no arrests in this case and the investigation remains ongoing.
