Beloved On-Duty School Crossing Guard Struck and Killed by Dump Truck Driver in QUEENS

October 20, 2023 QUEENS, New York – An on-duty school crossing guard was fatally struck by the driver of a dump truck in Queens Friday morning, police said.

Krystyna Naprawa, 63, was struck in the crosswalk at Woodhaven Blvd. & Atlantic Ave. when the driver of a dump truck was making a right turn onto Atlantic Ave. at around 8:00am, in the Woodhaven neighborhood of Queens, NY.

Naprawa, who immigrated to New York City from Poland 40 years ago was a fixture in the woodhaven community of Queens. The beloved crossing guard has worked for the NYPD since 2010.

The 39-year-old dump truck driver for Manolos Trucking LLC out of Belleville New Jersey remained on scene and the victim was pronounced dead on arrival by EMS, according to police.

“She had a very sweet personality. She never had any enemies. She used to help the children, helps the people cross the street all the time.” said Stephanie Peppel , a distraught member of the community speaking about the character of the fallen NYPD crossing guard.

According to police, no criminality has been found and specialized units of the NYPD highway division are still investigating the fatal incident.
