August 05, 2023 Roosevelt Island, NYC – A man was shot and killed by NYPD after he allegedly charged at officers while swinging a large kitchen knife at police responding to 911 calls of a man acting erratic who was threatening relatives at an apartment building on Roosevelt Island late Friday evening.
The encounter between the armed 21-year-old man and officers happened in close quarters inside an apartment building elevator lobby, said police.

According to police officials, upon arrival just before midnight at 540 West Main Street, three responding officers entered an elevator while a fourth officer waited near the lobby when suddenly a 21-year-old man armed with a knife appeared out from a second elevator and reportedly charged at the officer while swinging the weapon.
“That officer retreated outside of the lobby and the suspect then charged towards the elevator occupied by our officers, still armed with the knife. The officers inside the elevator attempted to deploy a taser and also discharged their firearms, striking the suspect,” said NYPD Assistant Chief Christine Bastedenbeck

CPR was performed by officers on the wounded man until EMS arrived and rushed him to Weill-Cornell Medical Center, where he subsequently died from his injuries.
