Driver Criminally Charged After Two Killed, Five Injured in High Speed Brooklyn Car Crash

March 21, 2023 BROOKLYN, New York – Two people were killed and five others injured after a speeding car barreled through an intersection striking another vehicle and pedestrians in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, on March 20th, Monday afternoon.

The two gravely injured people were rushed to Maimonides Hospital but did not survive their injuries and were pronounced dead. Five others were seriously hurt, suffering various injuries, cops said.

Vitaliy Konoplyov, 49, driver of the speeding car remained on the scene and was taken into police custody. Initially it was unknown if Konoplyov was intoxicated or experiencing a medical emergency during the crash.

The NYPD has since criminally charged the 49-year-old with manslaughter and aggravated unlicensed operator of a motor vehicle in connection with fatal crash, said officials.

The collision happened just before 1 p.m. when according to police officials, a 49-year-old driver of a white sedan allegedly lost control of the car after speeding through a red light striking another car and pedestrians at the intersection of 64th St & 18th Avenue, cops said.

The investigation into the deadly incident is still ongoing
