Woman declared dead at a nursing home, was discovered breathing at Long Island funeral home hours later

February 6 2023 LONG ISLAND, New York – An 82-year-old woman was pronounced dead at a nursing home, was discovered breathing at Long Island funeral home hours later.

The woman was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Water’s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson, officials confirmed.

She was taken to Davis Funeral Home in Miller Place at 1:30 p.m., the woman was found breathing at a funeral home at 2:09pm, just hours after being pronounced dead. She was rushed to a local hospital, officials said.

It’s unclear if the woman was declared dead in error or if she experienced a medical episode.


The incident was referred to the New York State Attorney General’s Office.
