December 31 2022 MANHATTAN, New York – Police say three officers were hurt in a machete attack at the NYE Check point in Times Square.
It happened just blocks away from New Year’s Eve Ball drop celebrations, as officers conducted security checks in Times Square.
Law officials said they are investigating if the man who allegedly attacked the officers had previously posted ‘jihadist writings’ online and traveled to New York City to target police,as reported by NBC News New York
Incident reported shortly after 10pm on the Saturday night, two hours before the New Year.
Police say a 19-year-old lone suspect from Maine, struck three officers with a machete, during a security check on West 52nd Street and 8th Avenue. It’s at this point when a back up NYPD officer fired their service weapon, hitting the suspect in the shoulder, officials said.
The officers were rushed to nearby city hospitals and all three are listed in stable condition.
The wounded suspect was also transported to an area hospital. And this attack has been investigated by the FBI, according to state authorities there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Officers were taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment, suspect was also rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead according to scanners, however preliminary reports by police say suspect is alive and was shot in the shoulder.
