BREAKING: Staten Island Ferry COUGHT FIRE, Hundreds Evacuated

December 22, 2022 Staten Island, New York – Around 600 passengers have been evacuated from Sandy Ground ferry in Staten Island, after a fire broke out on board.

Police say at approximately 5:23pm, FDNY Marine and NYPD Harbor Units responded to reports of a boat in distress and passengers sickened by the smell on board.

“We was in the middle of the ocean; there was sharks; women was crying…we got on a new boat and started drinking”

Officials confirmed that a fire erupted on the Staten Island ferry and was contained to engine room, prompting evacuations of over 600 passengers.

Passengers are reportedly being evacuated from the Staten Island Ferry “The Sandy Ground” vessel. Multiple tug boats crews are bringing rescued people to SI ferry terminal.

Five passengers sustained minor injuries. Crew of the vessel quickly made sure to seal the engine room and evacuate the area as per protocol, according to FDNY chief.

Deputy Commissioner of Operations of Staten Island Ferry says they don’t know the reason for the fire at this time and it will be investigated.
