Protesters in NYC Demand a Shut Down of Rikers Island Jail

November 17, 2022 Manhattan, New York – A group of about a hundred activists and supporters rallied in Foley Square on Thursday afternoon just ahead of a hearing for consideration of federal takeover at the Rikers Island jail facility.

The protesters in Foley Square held signs with the names of 18 people who have allegedly died in custody or just shortly after their release from the jail. Community members and elected officials met in lower Manhattan to demand the jail be shutdown.

Those directly impacted by the 18 deaths marched in solidarity through the streets of downtown Manhattan to the U.S. District Courthouse as they chanted “18 people have died, close Rikers now”
