Joel’s family, friends, and supporters marched to the front of the 34th Precinct at W 183rd St & Broadway Friday morning to demand Justice and answers for Capellan’s family. The family would like to grieve and they say watching the body camera footage will help the family understand exactly how the deadly shooting unfolded.

According to NYPD officials, Capellan was allegedly holding a gun during a fight with another man and refused police verbal commands to drop the weapon. Jenny Rodriguez, Joel’s mother says an autopsy report from the medical examiner revealed that her son was shot at least 36 times.

“You don’t shoot an animal 36 times. NYPD goes to training, they are trained to defuse and deescalate.” Jenny said.

Police officials say Joel was rushed to area hospital where he later died from his injuries.

A gun was recovered from the deadly police shooting scene where the attorney general’s office has now opened an investigation into Capellan’s death. Joel’s family is demanding to view police body camera footage by Monday or before his funeral.
