Man Killed, NYC Street Festival Ends in Violence

September 18, 2022 | Manhattan, New York: Just after 7:30pm, Elias Castillo, 29, was shot in the abdomen near 2nd Ave & E 116th, where a street festival was winding down in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan. Police said the 29-year-old victim was in a verbal dispute in front of a local grocery store that turned violent and was shot by an unidentified assailant.

NYPD officers searched a building next to the Pueblo Mexicano Grocery Store near E 116th & 2nd Avenue for a suspect that fled but were unable to locate the perpetrator. Aviation was also requested to aid in searching for the alleged shooter.

According to police officials, Castillo was rushed to Harlem Hospital after taking gunfire to the body and suffering a serious injury. The 29-year-old gunshot victim was later pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, cops said.

Throughout the day the festival was packed with attendees of all ages enjoying live music and food from street vendor stalls lining each side of the street on E 116th, from 3rd Avenue to 2nd Avenue.

The fleeing suspect was able to avoid apprehension and there are no arrests at this time. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
