Off-Duty NYPD Detective Opens Fire on Pair of Robbery Suspects in Manhattan

August 15, 2022 | Manhattan, New York: An off-duty NYPD detective engaged a pair of would-be robbery suspects and opened fire on the two perpetrators, Monday morning in East Harlem, cops said. According to NYPD officials, the off-duty NYPD Detective drew his service weapon after spotting the masked men take cash and a wrist watch from the victim.

The victim, a 25-year-old construction worker was working in a nearby NYCHA building when he was approached walking near Park Avenue and E 122nd street by two masked men that jumped out of a tan vehicle, while a getaway driver waited for the duo of armed crooks, said police.

The veteran detective with the Firearm Suppression Division identified himself as an NYPD officer before discharging his service weapon and firing off at least one shot toward the suspects after one the perpetrators faced the detective while pointing a weapon. It has yet to be confirmed if any of the suspects were struck. A loaded Smith and Wesson firearm was left behind by the suspects and recovered at the scene, said police officials.

The construction worker was not seriously injured during the armed robbery but was taken to an area hospital as a precautionary measure after taking a punch to the head, police said. The NYPD detective was not injured but evaluated for ringing of the ears and taken to an area hospital for further medical attention, authorities said.

At this time there are no arrests. Detectives are searching for three suspects, two armed crooks and their getaway driver after the armed robbery in Manhattan.
