August 12 2022 MANHATTAN, New York – as asylum seekers continue to pour into ‘Sanctuary cities’ such as Washington DC and New York City, DC mayor asked for National Guard to be activated to assist.
As New York City shelters continue to fill up, two additional buses from Texas, arrived Friday morning with approximately 89 migrants.
On August 10th, three buses of migrants from South America seeking asylum arriving in Texas are being transported to New York City on charters by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
According to Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Manuel Castro, the charter buses are expected to arrive daily. Port Authority Bus terminal received three additional busses of migrants on Wednesday morning, who were met by press and a collective of supporters from South Bronx Mutual Aid.
The mutual aid group was the migrants only form of help as the first few buses arrived from Texas into NYC. As of Wednesday August 10th there is now a holding area inside of Port Authority where asylum seekers are given food and a tote bag with information. Migrants were also helped with paper work needed.
We spoke with Gustavo Mendez, who made a 41 day journey from Caracas, Venezuela to Texas. Mendez told us about the dangers and fear of encountering cartels along the way. Gustavo recounted days of walking through a jungle with nothing but the clothes on his back.
Mendez also told us that he crossed chest high waters of the Rio Grande from Piedras Negras into Eagle Pass, Texas.
NYC officials have opened some emergency shelters throughout the five boroughs. The men are staying in Manhattan shelters and those in the LGBTQ+ community along with women and families are being taken to Bronx Shelters.
