19-year-old Shot and Killed in a Backpack Robbery at BJs in Brooklyn

August 4 2022 BROOKLYN, New York – BJs customer was shot and killed in the parking lot shortly after store’s closing on Thursday night.

Dereck Chen, 19-year-old, was shot in store’s parking lot elevator, in what police described as a robbery gone wrong.

Incident occured just after 10pm, store’s closing time, on Shore Parkway in Bath Beach, Brooklyn.

An 18-year-old suspect attempted to rob the victim and a fight broke out over victim’s backpack, robber shot victim in the face and shoulder, police say.

As suspect fled, he was apprehended and arrested, police said. Victim was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
