June 12, 2022 | MANHATTAN, NY: LGBTQ protesters gathered outside of Chelsea Piers to protest an appearance of Ron DeSantis. Jewish Leadership Conference, that is organized by the Tikvah Fund, with Ron DeSantis as one of their featured speakers.
Amid threats of protest by community members and L.G.B.T.Q. supporters, the event space decided not to cancel the convention but to instead donate any money received from the Tikvah event to “groups that protect L.G.B.T.Q.+ communities, and foster and amplify productive debates about L.G.B.T.Q.+ issues.”
“We could not disagree more strongly with many of Ron DeSantis’ actions in office. One response to abhorrent behavior is to counter it with positive action.”, said a statement provided by Chelsea Piers.
NYPD deployed an SRG unit to Chelsea Piers where activists protesting the Florida Governor’s appearance at the Jewish Leadership Conference held all day protests. SRG units have recently clashed with activists at homeless encampments.
Upon SRG units arrival, protesters could be heard asking police, “There’s homeless people here? What are you here for?” Demonstrations continued throughout the day with only verbal clashes between opposing groups.
