EMT Shot by Patient Inside Ambulance on Staten Island

May 18, 2022 | STATEN ISLAND, NY: At approximately 8:06 pm, police officers responded to a report of shots fired at 845 Forest Avenue in the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island. EMTs picked up a drunk bar patron with recent police interactions, who turned violent once inside the ambulance, police said.

Upon police arrival, officers confirmed that an EMT officer was shot. According to police, 37-year-old Thomas McCauley is accused of allegedly firing one shot that struck an EMT worker in the shoulder. The EMT was rushed by his driving partner to Richmond University Medical Center where the victim is listed in stable condition.

The injured EMT officer is not a member of the FDNY.

The suspect who fled the scene was caught a short time later and has since been taken into custody. A weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

The investigation into this incident is still ongoing.
