March 23, 2022 – STATEN ISLAND, NY: A 10-year-old student suffered a medical emergency on Wednesday at PS 78 Elementary School. According to police, the boy collapsed during gym class at the Staten Island school and a defibrillator was used to try and revive the child. Police officials say upon arrival at the elementary school, officers located an unresponsive 10-year-old boy who was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center and was pronounced dead, said police.
Jodi Contento, Principal of the PS 78 School released a statement in a letter sent out to students and staff about the tragic incident:
“It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students passed away today. This is a tragedy for the student’s family, our students, and our school community. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the student’s family and our entire school community, Please understand that we are respecting the privacy of the student’s family by not sharing the student’s name.”, Contento said.
This is now the second tragedy in the same month and borough to hit a public school system that is already facing a shortage of school nurses. For reasons still under investigation, the official cause of death is unknown and the child who collapsed is said to have a pre-existing medical condition that may have played a factor in the medical emergency the boy suffered.
