February 23, 2022 – Kyiv, Ukraine: Russian President Putin declared a “special military operation” in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region Thursday morning as latest U.S. intelligence reports suggest an imminent full-scale Russian invasion. Just a day before, President Biden initiated a blocking of sanctions on Russian financial institutions in response to the ongoing conflict escalation. Russia showed that economic sanctions aren’t stopping the continued deployment of troops to eastern Ukraine.
According to Pentagon official John Kirby, the aggression is clearly visible with the amassing of Russian military troops on the Ukrainian border. Airports in Ukraine, including international airports Zaporizhzhya & Kherson were closed to the public for preventative measures until further notice. Reports of airport runways being blocked in an attempt at preventing the landing of Russian cargo planes.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has recently denounced the growing conflict and reassured that Ukraine does not pose a threat to Russia. Zelensky echoed the risks of a major war in Europe and refuted any plans of offensive stance in the Donbas region.
Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv has announced preparedness of around 5,000 bomb shelters, stocked with water, supplies, and generators for power outages.
