Tanker Truck with 10,000 Pounds of Gas Bursts Into Flames After Crash in Long Island

February 16, 2022 – 3 Firefighters and 1 civilian were injured after a tanker truck carrying close to 10 thousand gallons of fuel overturned into a building and ignited early Wednesday morning in Rockville Centre, Long Island.

Rockville Centre Fire Chief Avondet spoke to press at the scene of the major fire on Long Island.

“I started a second alarm when I came here. There was fire everywhere in the street, the tanker, the two buildings. And when I looked down Sunrise Highway, There was fire coming out of seven or eight manhole covers all the way down to the underpass. About a quarter mile down the road at Sunrise Highway.

It was it’s one of the worst things I’ve seen in my 47 year career. Approximately 13,000 gallons of gasoline has spilled onto the street and ignited from an overturned tractor trailer. There wass actually three firefighters hurt, two went to the hospital, one RMA, refuse medical attention.

According to the chief, The driver of the tanker was also hospitalized for evaluation. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
