1 Dead; 1 Firefighter Injured Following Upper West Side Apartment Fire

February 15, 2022 – Manhattan, NY: A fatal fire occurred just before 3:00 a.m early Tuesday morning at the Amsterdam Houses on W63rd Street and Amsterdam avenue in the Upper West Side Neighborhood of Manhattan. FDNY responded to a 911 call for a fire at the 13-story building. Upon arrival, fire crews observed fire on the fifth floor of the building.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, one firefighter was injured and transported by EMS to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. During a preliminary search of the building, firefighters located an unresponsive individual in a fifth-floor apartment, fire officials said.

According to police, the unidentified male victim, presumably in their 50s was transported by EMS to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The FDNY Fire Marshal is conducting an investigating to determine the official cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
