East Village 2-Alarm Fire Prompts Large FDNY Response

January 10, 2022 Manhattan, New York – Firefighters battled a two alarm blaze that broke out in the East Village Monday evening, at a store front of a building on 3rd Avenue and Avenue A.

According to FDNY officials, the fire at the Essex Card Shop occurred just a day after a deadly fire claimed the lives of at least 8 children and 9 adults in a Bronx apartment building caused by a malfunctioning electric space heater.

We spoke with Mark D. Levine, Manhattan Borough President in front of the destroyed card shop.

“It’s a reminder that fire remains an ever present threat in the city after the horrible tragedy in the Bronx yesterday” says Mark Levine, the new Manhattan Borough President

Authorities said the Red Cross was called in to assist any tenants affected or displaced by the fire, as the official cause remains under investigation.
