Cancel Rent & Shut Down Evictions March – New York

January 08, 2022 – New York City: New York State eviction moratorium is set to expire on January 15, 2022. Housing rights activists rallied and marched over the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday afternoon, demanding that landlords cancel rent, as many are facing a possible winter eviction.

We spoke to one of the organizers with Crown Heights Tenant Union as the group was marching over the bridge about their action.

“They tried to throw us out on the streets and they’re trying to do it again on January 15th, in the depths of winter, at a peak of illness and hospitalizations. There should never be evictions.

There should never be evictions in the winter time, ever, and most definitely we need an extension of the universal eviction moratorium in New York state through the end of June 2022.

We need to abolish winter evictions. We need to abolish evictions without cause. We’re just not gonna allow our neighbors or ourselves be throw out into the streets. That’s why we took the streets and that’s why we took the bridge today.”
