July 29 2021 – MANHATTAN, New York:
9 people were arrested during a demonstration for housing rights for the homeless.
The organization, called Housing Works, blame Bill de Blasio, calling him a broken record. They smashed records on the street to demonstrate.
Their press release states:
This action is part of the 30 Days of Homeless Rights campaign, created by directly impacted activists Maria Walles and Shams “Da Homeless Hero” DaBaron, and enacted by a coalition of homeless rights organizations and directly impacted advocates over the month of July, 2021. The campaign was created in response to the city’s poorly conceived and unsafe plan to evict 8,000 homeless residents from the hotels where they have sheltered in place throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
At one point during the protest in which demonstrators blocked the street for more than 30 minutes, a street food truck drove on the sidewalk to get around, the police ran after the driver and arrested him on the spot.
NYPD says 10 protesters were arrested after blocking street near City Hall in demo demanding permanent housing for homeless people and an end to hotel transfers.
