August 8 2020 – MANHATTAN, New York: BLM “warriors in the garden” Protest leader Derrick Ingram, following a 5 hour stand off with police yesterday, turned himself in the 18th precinct. He, his supporters, and Hawk Newsome gathered and spoke at Bryant Park at 8am. Derrick Ingram addresses a cheering crowd:“I can’t talk a lot about exactly what happened. I just want to say I’m thankful for all the love and support and kind words and the amazing outreach and kindness I received in the last 24 hours,” Ingram said in the video. “I’m highly traumatized, from everything from the drones to the dogs to the lies that have been told by the NYPD, and I’m ready to make a change. I think we should focus on getting [NYPD] Commissioner Shea out of office.”They then marched to the precinct.

After a brief discussion with Newsome, officers put down their shields and have allowed only Ingram and a few close friends or colleagues to proceed past the barricade so he can turn himself in. The waiting crowd chants, “No justice, no peace.”

About the attempted arrest of Derrick Ingram, mayor Bill de Blasio says, “Commissioner Shea made the right decision to call off the operation. Assaulting an officer is unacceptable and will always lead to consequences, but arrests must be made properly.”

He was arrested and charged this morning with second degree assault, a felony. His charges were later reduced to a 3rd degree assault. For causing a temporary hearing loss to an officer after shouting through bullhorn at her during the protest.

On August 7 2020 he was streaming live on Instagram as NYPD officers waited outside of his door in order to arrest him for an unknown reason. Dwreck Ingram said he was inside of his apartment when officers arrived without a search warrant and told him to come out and surrender to officers. In his livestream he mentioned that he was unaware of the charges but believed it may have had something to do with a protest that had occurred last month in Bayside, Queens. Police had Ingram surrounded in his apartment and the Emergency Services Unit, K9, riot gear cops had entered the building during the standoff.

Police were seen speaking to a legal representative of Ingram outside of the building, and Ingram himself in the live feed said to police, who were banging repeatedly on his door, that he is coordinating his exit with his lawyer. Police officer who identified as a warrant squad in Ingram’s live stream was heard saying that he will be arrested as part of an ongoing investigation. They were not able to provide a warrant for his arrest.

Police apparently could not secure a warrant and left the scene, causing protesters in the streets to erupt in cheers. Ingram eventually left the apartment covered by a sheet and getting into one of two cars and driving off.

NY post later reported that he was wanted for assault “The NYPD was attempting to make an apprehension for assault on a police officer,” an NYPD spokeswoman said. “At this time, the investigation is active and ongoing.”

NYPD later confirmed that Derrick Ingram’s alleged crime was using a megaphone to shout in an officer’s ear during a protest in June, causing temporary hearing loss.

He was arrested and charged this morning with second degree assault, a felony. It was later overturned to 3rd degree assault.
