On Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at approximately 1825 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck at the intersection of 97 Street and 5 Avenue, within the confines of the 23 Precinct. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 29-year-old male pedestrian lying on the roadway with severe head and body trauma. EMS responded to the location and transported the aided male to New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that an 18-year-old male operator of a 2015 BMW sedan was traveling southbound on 5 Avenue at the intersection of East 97 Street, when he struck the pedestrian who was crossing 5 Avenue, within the crosswalk, from east to west. The driver remained on scene and the investigation is ongoing.
The deceased has been identified as: Batten, Justin 29-year-old male
