April 1 2020, 4:00am – BRONX, New York: Police responded to a 911 call of a male with a knife at the corner of Zerega Avenue and Westchester Avenue, in the Bronx. Upon arrival, uniformed officers encountered a 55-year-old male with a knife and what appeared to be a firearm (it turned out to be a BB gun). The man claimed to have been diagnosed with coronavirus in what appears to be an attempt at “suicide by cop”. The officers gave the suspect multiple verbal demands to drop the weapons, at which time the male continued to approach and menace the officers. Two officers discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect in the torso. EMS responded to the location and transported the male suspect to NYC Health & Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition. EMS also transported the two officers to Westchester Square Hospital for treatment and observation, both in stable condition, where they were treated and released. The suspect is in custody with charges pending and the weapons he possessed were recovered from the scene.
